To my own discredit, 2011 has not been a year were I've stretched my musical feelers far and wide, you'll find few forays into the deep cuts of modern music-- no new leafs upturned. Instead, in retrospect, it seems I've gripped on to a few brilliant albums and steeled my purposes toward them. Unquestionably two of the greatest records put out in recent memory from Bon Iver and James Blake. Bon Iver simply bleeds nostalgia in his self titled release, his music conjures vast landscapes and a certain hazy warmth. Blake produces emotion with restrained glory, minimalist layers build something far greater-- its as if his controlled melancholy exercises patience that pays off through its apparent disorder. These two chaps top the steeple, but there were still others who put together samples of musical genius.
I won't justify every choice, nor will I supply any sort of adjective ladder for you to climb while you listen. Critique my list if you may, no has dared to ever before-- thus demonstrating the giant of musically intellectual thought I am.
8. James Vincent McMorrow - Early in the Morning
James Vincent McMorrow - We Don't Eat by Vagrant Records
7. Panda Bear - Tomboy
6. The War On Drugs - Slave Ambient
4. Fleet Foxes - Hopelessness Blues
3. Youth Lagoon - The Year of Hibernation
2. James Blake - James Blake
Someones has teamed with the big ol bully, withholding, record companies. Blake's music is no where to be found on the internet, so go buy the album on iTunes. If just one song? Get Lindesfarne II, its spectacular.
1. Bon Iver - Bon Iver
And why not end it with a collaboration of our two favorites?
Now scroll back up and share all this good music with your friends and family over the holidays.
